Aldeburgh is a little seaside town in Suffolk. Peaceful, quiet, and a great place to go for fish 'n chips. But... once a year, half the county descends on it for the Aldeburgh Carnival, and an amazing transformation takes place.
There are events taking place over the whole weekend, including childrens races, egg boat contests, a mini marathon, songs of praise, swimming and various performances. All of which culminates in the Monday evening spectacular finale.
The streets fill with thousands of people - there are displays of dancing, music and many colourful characters. As the evening darkens, a procession of all the people make their way down the normally empty streets, and they light their way with chinese lanterns. It's an amazing sight to see. Upon reaching the beach, everyone settles down for a fantastic fireworks display.

Deben Rotaract take an active interest in Aldeburgh Carnival. We go and marvel at the lanterns, we enjoy the street performers, and we ooh and arh at the fireworks along with everyone else... but we also collect money for charity.
With buckets in hands, and charity armbands in place, we wander round smiling hopefully at the merrymakers. The vast majority of whom are remarkably generous, and cheerfully part with coins and notes. Once the cost of the fireworks has been paid for, the money, usually counting into the thousands, is donated to various local charities.
So, if you're in Aldebugh on the Monday night, and you see some smiling 18-30s shaking buckets, come on over and say Hi. Oh, and drop a coin or two in :-)
